Pure Bliss…the bar

Bliss bar - review by Kari Clouston

Nicely hidden down one of the many twisting alleys in the Old Town, ‘Bliss’ has lifted the classy lounge notch that little higher. This new trendy and contempory lounge bar, open now for just under a month, is becoming the new hang-out for the sophisticated Parisian crowd in Nice. Seating arrangements are not at high comfy levels of course but pleasantly stylish and great to admire whilst sipping on your Mojito.

The prices at ‘Bliss’ are pretty standard for the Old Town, with a bottle of champagne hitting the €70 ‘ouch’ mark, a cocktail from a selection of ten or so at €9 each and a satisfying frosty pint at €6.50. Every night of the week offers different varieties of music (mainly soul, funk & lounge) by inviting a selection of the Cote d’Azur’s most talented DJ’s. If you’re looking for that up-market “with-it” crowd or you’re simply fed up of live U2 covers in the Irish/Anglophone pubs then this is the place to be seen in. To get there, search for the “Tire Bouchon” restaurant on rue de la Prefecture and you’ll find ‘Bliss’ just on the road behind.

These uber trendy bars seem to be popping up all over the Old Town in Nice at the moment. There seems to be a high turnover rate at this end of the market - it seems very few survive. But I hope this one does. I spent a very enjoyable evening here with some friends (and yes the champagne does cost 70 euros a bottle) recently and the owner and waiters could not have been more attentive even though we were at least 20 years older than most of the cool, svelte, perfectly tanned young things lounging around the bar!

I find that you can walk in to some of the ‘trendy’ bars in Nice and the whole place turns to stare at you if you are not part of the usual crowd. I have to say that I expected the same from Bliss when I saw the bouncers on the door just waiting to turn us away for not being quite cool enough.
However, the door was warmly held open for us by a smiling door man and the staff seemed more than happy to make 6 giggling girls enjoy their end of week Friday night drinks and it has now become a regular haunt.
    Let’s hope it stays!
